The Defense on Offense

Dates to be announced

Wish you could see your section friends from the summer program again? Talk about getting together but never manage it? Here's your chance! Four or more members from the same section at Trial Practice Institutes can receive a 15% discount by signing up for Theories and Themes, and will be assigned to the same small groups for this program. This applies to all previous NCDC summer programs, so get in touch with your summer section friends and have a reunion!

The concept of Theory of Defense is central to every aspect of NCDC training. Our short program focusing on this concept has been one of our most popular offerings over the last 20 years. Although Theory has been a constant, our methods of communicating it have evolved and this evolution is reflected in the changing titles of the program: originally, Theories and Themes; later, Theories, Themes, and Stories; and then most recently, Theories, Stories and Improv. Reflected in this progression is the fact that this program has become our laboratory for the development of training techniques. Even though we have restored the original name, Theories and Themes, this continues to represent the cutting edge of criminal trial skills.

Early registration is encouraged both because of limited enrollment and because of pre-program materials which you will want to consider before arriving in Atlanta.

The two and one-half day program uses the same successful teaching methods employed in all NCDC courses. Intensive small group exercises supplemented by lectures and demonstrations by a nationally recognized faculty allow the participants to conceptualize, observe and practice the suggested techniques. A video record of each participant's small group work encourages reflection and continued improvement long after the weekend is over.

Substitutions & Cancellations

This program admits participants on a first come, first served basis. Cancellations are accepted until one week before the start date. Tuition fees (less the $25 registration fee) will be refunded for cancellations received prior to the deadline. After that, no refund will be granted if the space cannot be filled from the waiting list; however, we may be able to apply credit to a future program if circumstances allow. Substitutions may be approved upon request.

Theories and Themes will be held at the Renaissance Atlanta Hotel-Concourse. The hotel has 24-hour free shuttle service to and from the airport.

NCDC will arrange hotel accommodations for participants, at a special rate for our group. Please note: Participants will make payment for all room charges directly to the hotel, BUT NCDC will make your reservations! Complete the reservation portion of the registration form and return it to NCDC.

A reserved room will be held until 4pm EST Thursday before the start date. If you arrive after that time, you must arrange for a deposit (or credit card guarantee) directly with the hotel at (404) 209-9999 or FAX (404) 209-7031. We send the hotel a housing list two weeks before the program so please do not call before then. If you wish to share a hotel room with another participant to economize, we will attempt (but not guarantee) to find you a roommate.

NOTE: The tuition fee does NOT include housing or meals other than the continental breakfast.

Continuing Legal Education Credits

NCDC applies for CLE accreditation for this program in states where participants request credit. NCDC programs are approved in most jurisdictions. Where a state charges for credits, charges are passed along to participants requesting credit from that state.
