Biography
Ian Marcus Amelkin joined the Federal Defenders in 2017. Previously, he worked as a staff attorney in Legal Aid Society’s Criminal Defense Practice and as an associate at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP. He clerked for the Honorable Myron H. Thompson of the Middle District of Alabama and the Honorable Chester J. Straub of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Mr. Marcus Amelkin graduated with high distinction from the University of Virginia and cum laude from New York University School of Law, where he was a Root-Tilden-Kern Scholar and a student in the Federal Defender Clinic.

Rebekah Sokol

Biography
Rebekah Sokol graduated from Tufts University, and then went on to Boston College Law School. She has spent the majority of her career so far with the Albany County Public Defender’s Office, defending indigent clients accused of crimes. She specializes in violent felonies, particularly homicides, and handles the most serious cases in her office. Recently she was promoted to Felony Supervisor, and oversees all of the felony attorneys in the Public Defender’s Office.

Biography
I’ve been a staff attorney at NDS Harlem since 2014. I represent client on felonies and misdemeanor in Manhattan Criminal and Supreme court from arraignment through the end of the trial level case. Prior to being a staff attorney, I graduated from Howard University School of Law in 2014. I also received a B.A. from Morehouse College in 2011.

Ariel Werner is a trial attorney in the Manhattan office of Federal Defenders of New York. Prior to joining the Federal Defenders in 2019, she served as a law clerk to the Honorable Edgardo Ramos of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and as a trial attorney with the Maryland Office of the Public Defender in Charles County. She is a graduate of Brown University and New York University School of Law, where she was a Root-Tilden-Kern Scholar.
